The Evolution of Professionalism in Health Care: Moving Towards an Interprofessional Future
Celebrating 10 Years of APHC!

June 1-3, 2022, at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and/or virtually via Zoom

The Academy for Professionalism in Health Care is an inclusive organization which welcomes all professionals and their trainees who are devoted to the study and advancement of professionalism in health-related fields. The upcoming conference will focus on how health care is adapting its practice, teaching, assessment and research of professionalism based on local, national and global health care changes. While it is critical to develop individual professional identities, it is also important to grow team and interprofessional identities. Blending and unifying professional values is challenging, yet necessary to optimize interprofessional teams that can function to the ultimate benefit of patients and communities.

While we will explore team-based professionalism in depth, this will also be our annual conference and an opportunity to take a broader look at what work is being done regarding professionalism theory and practice, education and research. Since we will also celebrate the 10-year anniversary of APHC, presentations will showcase the Academy’s activities and accomplishments. We are planning a hybrid conference which will take place in-person at Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) and virtually using Zoom. This arrangement should offer the best of both worlds, but based on Covid-19 conditions, the conference could go all virtual, if needed. (See below for Philadelphia health safety precautions.)

The conference will kick off with a Coffee Conversation - the past, present and future of APHC with the founder of APHC, David Doukas, the current president, Tom Harter, and the incoming president, Dennis Novack discussing the evolution of APHC. The conference will conclude with a Fireside Chat with Preston Reynolds, past APHC president and the founder of the Leadership Excellence in Educating for Professionalism (LEEP) program. Four plenaries include Holly Humphrey, the president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation; Fred Hafferty talking about Imposters: Identity Theft & the Rekindling of a Sociological Imagination within Professions Thinking; Barry Egener discussing Organizational Professionalism; and Jill Thistlethwaite sharing views on Evolving from a Professional to an Interprofessional Identity: Implications for Education and Practice.

Over 70 sessions and posters will cover topics such as:
  • Assessment & Remediation
  • Cultural Influences
  • Ethics
  • Interprofessional Education
  • Medical Education
  • Professional Formation & Identity - Individuals/Teams
  • Religious Identity
  • Self-efficacy
  • Social Justice & Advocacy
  • Theoretical Concepts
  • Wellness & Resilience
